Choir of Maritime University of Szczecin

The Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin conducted by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch, PhD, has now existed for 16 years. Currently, the ensemble gathers over 90 members; musicians and amateurs, enthusiasts of all kinds of music. From the very beginning, the Choir was a true showcase of the city and the region, spreading the maritime tradition in the country and abroad. Now the group consists of over 80 people and has on its account: hundreds of concerts, over a dozen international tours, several dozen major prizes at prestigious choir festivals in Poland and abroad, five CDs and numerous premieres of contemporary music. The Choir’s repertoire is versatile, ranging from the choral classics to the original arrangements of the most popular contemporary songs and pieces. Talented, young singers are constantly struggling to demythologize the stereotypical image of a choir. They try to adopt a subtle and ‘witty’ choreography and thus make the listener smile once in a while. The Choir’s goal is to achieve a coherent sound, often going beyond the choral tradition showing that music has no limits, and that on stage the most important is unity, harmony and passion.

Conductor

Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch

Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch started her artistic education at the age of five that she later continued in the music high school in Legnica. She graduated with honours from I.J. Paderewski Music University in Poznań (branch in Szczecin) under the supervision of prof. J. Szyrocki. In September 2011 she obtained her PhD degree at the F. Chopin Music University in Warsaw. She continued her academic career at The S. Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk earning further academic degrees. Currently she works as a professor at the Academy of Art in Szczecin. She holds the titles of the best conductor at numerous choral festivals and competitions (Chełmno, Głogów, Legnica, Prague, Bratislava, Lublin). She is also a member of Jury at choral festivals and competitions. Employed at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch works as a teacher of choral conducting, scores reading and vocal ensembles leading methodology. She is also the artistic director of a unique Common Sounds project proposed by the Choir of Maritime University of Szczecin.
